“The character of this domain of discursive democracy remains that of a general Forum where the relations are those speaking and being heard.”
According to Habermas, democracy comes in three forms; liberal, republic and deliberative. The liberal form Of democracy is the understanding between competing interests. In general equal rights including the right to vote should be granted to the people and include their inquiries And concerns in their decision-making. It is based on the Enlightenment. During the 17th and 18th century where people like John Locke established the concept of life liberty and property. Republican democracy focuses on the well being of the people and allows for representatives to vouch for the majority. Deliberative democracy is an assembly of citizens brought together to learn and deliver a topic in order to inform public opinion and decision making. It creates a space for people to discuss their opinions of an issue and how they want to approach the issue. It can be practiced by both representative and direct democracy, in simple terms liberals and Republicans. In deliberative democracy, everyone is affected by the decision made whether it be positive or negative. However, in a society that is ruled by the upper class, such deliberation may harm the majority and uplift the minority to maintain class and power.
I chose to talk about what delivery to democracy is because in reading the text I was really confused as to what the term meant and found myself having to go back and reread at certain parts. In the United States, we follow more of a republican system than a democratic. I feel like the parties are just to maintain a balance between ideas. As citizens, we elect a potential candidate to represent the majority and although it is impossible to be the voice of so many people, that is the foundation of which the U.S was built upon.
