UNAUTHORIZED MIGRATION- The Dream is Now Documentary

The dream act was first introduced in 2001 but died quickly in committee when it came to the floor for a vote. Soon after small secretive groups began to form underground on college campuses and the leaders were Hispanic immigrants who did not have citizenship and wanted the same rights as American citizens. They advocated for reform in the United States government to grant them educational and economical rights so that they can achieve their dreams. They were undocumented young people in the country who wanted to gain citizenship and equal rights as their counterparts not only for themselves before their classmates and their family. Undocumented students were barred from federal aid and state aid and their tuition increased drastically especially for those out of state which put thousands of college students in financial jeopardy. Undocumented immigrants couldn’t get a driver’s license or state ID; it was unfortunate for those who aspired to attain a college degree or go into the military. The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act) was pushed for implementation by the undocumented immigrants, most of them were teens and young adults, which would provide temporary residency and eventually lead to permanent residency for the immigrants. This would also allow them the right to work, receive an education and participate in the military.

I chose to talk about this documentary because the United States has limited the potential of many immigrants, especially the ones who seek higher education and financial status. There are people like Erika and Ola in the documentary who were at the top of their class and wanted to give themselves and their family a better life, but couldn’t accomplish it because of their undocumented status. The United States was created by Europeans striping the Natives of their territory and culture; they’ve brought about the anglo-Saxon culture which is now diluted with multiculturalism. It is unfortunate that the United States is labeled as the “land of opportunities” but the government won’t allow the immigrants to share those opportunities.
